Remember

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

One of the most fun times I have ever had was a few years ago when I joint my friends to set off fireworks. We went to one of the friends an allotment that is located on top of a hill; from there you can see the rest of Exeter. With the supervision of an adult, we let of fireworks and watched them as they exploded and joint with the other sparkles of colourful fire in the sky that could bee seen coming from houses all over Exeter.

At one point in the night a rocket was let off, unfortunately it wasn’t placed in it’s tube properly, so it fell over and shot towards us. Luckily there was a heap of horse dung near us; which we quickly dived behind. The rocket got stuck in the dung and exploded, throwing bits of horse manure everywhere. Thankfully no one was hurt, and we all had a laugh about it afterwards.

This is just a note to everyone who is planning on letting fireworks off tonight. Please be careful!

SimplPie Plugin

Posted on Wednesday, November 5, 2008

logo_simplepie_horizontal.png I have been working on my PHP skills and have created a flatpress plugin that parses a feed and displays it as a list. It uses the SimplePie class. It’s been tested here and seems to work well. There is a small amount of configuration that needs to be done but otherwise it’s simple to use and it can be edited to suit your needs.

Update: Updated the plugin to output a valid list.

A Guide to flatPress:#1- from the top

Posted on Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Iíve been using FlatPress for almost a year now and have discovered that there are things that can be done with it that arenít documented (very well). So here is where I will have a compilation of tips, tricks, tutorials and general banter about the wonderful world of FlatPress blogging.

What is it?

So what is FlatPress? Well FlatPress is a flat file blogging system (runs using text files) that only requires access to a php server. It is designed to be the go-to blogging platform for those that donít have access to a database. FlatPress features:

  • Standard-compliant (XHTML valid)
  • Plugin support
  • Widget system
  • Easy to customize with themes (powered by Smarty)

Sounds good but usually these types of projects are unsupported or dead (no longer being developed). Well yes that maybe true with a lot of these projects but I assure you now that FlatPress is not unsupported because the main developers answer almost every question thrown at them. The project is far from dead; the last update was 25/09/08 and the next iteration is constantly being worked on.

Cool, how much does it cost?

How much is it!? Itís free! Did I forget to mention that the project is open source. So what reason do you have for not trying it? Check out the projects site or if you want to give it a test run try it on opensourcecms.com

Need help with the installation? Take a look at this article. Still confused? Then take a look at this article and accompanying video

The FlatMistyLook Flatpress theme has been updated to work better with the newer version of Flatpress. The majority of updates where simple CSS statments that effect only the admin panel though there were small tweaks to the front end too.

Here’s the changelog:

  • Added CSS making the widgets panel usable
  • Added CSS for the sub menu
  • Added CSS making the plugins panel a bit more usable
  • Changed links in footer to sneakatron.co.uk
  • Removed bar when there are not any categories

If you are using the FlatMistyLook theme please update it.
